Bibhu Mohapatra Fall Winter 2024-25 Fashion Show

In a departure from his usual format, Bibhu Mohapatra, the celebrated fashion designer with a 16-year legacy, dazzled attendees with an evening extravaganza at the Pierre hotel to unveil his latest collection. Known for his elaborate occasion wear, Mohapatra transformed the venue into a fitting backdrop for his opulent designs, marking a significant shift from the previous season's runway, which doubled as his work and shop space.

This season, Mohapatra showcased a renewed sense of cohesion, a welcomed departure from recent seasons marked by some turbulence. The collection exuded a sense of relaxation and fun, reflecting the designer's vision of his muse. Drawing inspiration from the captivating imagery of photographer Helmut Newton, particularly his portrayal of women in the late '70s and '80s, Mohapatra explored themes of power, fetish, and flesh.

While Newton's work often juxtaposed women as both powerful and objectified, Mohapatra ingeniously translated these themes into his designs. Rather than opting for overt displays of skin, the collection teased glimpses of it through strategically placed sheer insets. A striking example included an ivory Alençon lace gown accentuated with a wide black corset belt, creating a captivating contrast. Mohapatra also experimented with latex leggings layered under sheer skirts, adding an edgy allure to the ensembles.

Elegance and simplicity intersected seamlessly in several looks, such as a Stockman-shaped tunic paired with a tulle skirt, both adorned with matching beaded embellishments. Another standout piece was a coordinated apron-front peplum top and skirt set, featuring vibrant "Yves" blue accents—a nod to the designer's color of the season—applied in stripes.

Collaborating once again with Janavi India, Mohapatra incorporated luxurious scarves and knitwear into his collection, further enhancing its appeal. While some silhouettes displayed subtle awkwardness, particularly in the placement of sheer panels, the finale dress stole the spotlight with its commanding strong shoulders, reminiscent of iconic characters like Alexis Carrington.
