Gabriela Hearst, in her final collection as creative director at Chloé, presented a celebratory and sustainable Spring/Summer 2024 collection that beautifully merged nature-inspired designs with an Uruguayan cowboy-cowgirl aesthetic. The collection paid homage to nature, featuring dresses made from spiraling ruffled knit, draped suede in the color of marguerite flowers, and metal-work frills holding up the shoulderlines of linen party dresses. Hearst drew inspiration from her own drawings of poppies, orchids, and calla lilies to create these exquisite pieces.
In addition to her nature-inspired designs, Hearst infused the collection with a touch of her Uruguayan background, styling it as a "cowboy-cowgirl" self-portrait. This was reflected in the collection's tailored pieces, including coats with metal-tipped lapels, bandana lasso embroidery, leather pants, and western boots. Hearst humorously referred to this as the "sheriff in town" look, which she identified with personally.
One of Hearst's remarkable achievements during her tenure at Chloé was her commitment to sustainability. Under her leadership, Chloé became the first luxury house to achieve B-Corp certification. She introduced sustainable fashion elements, such as the knitted suede and recycled mesh Nama sneaker, which became a commercial success. Throughout her time at Chloé, Hearst consistently advocated for ethical and environmentally conscious practices, addressing the climate emergency with progressive, science-based solutions.
Reflecting on her legacy, Hearst expressed pride in the growth of Chloé's sustainability department, which expanded from one person to twelve during her tenure. She also emphasized the environmentally friendly aspects of her final collection, with woven fabrics being 70% low-impact and knitwear materials being 80% low-impact.
In her closing remarks, Hearst discussed the importance of clean and abundant energy, specifically mentioning nuclear fusion as a potential solution. She highlighted the significant advancements and breakthroughs in fusion technology, expressing hope that it could help address the climate crisis.
The collection's conclusion saw Gabriela Hearst leading the way in a celebratory dance, marking her memorable farewell from Chloé with optimism and a commitment to sustainability.
