Oude Waag Spring Summer 2024 collection fashion show at Shanghai Fashion Week SS24 (October 11, 2023).

Jingwei Yin's Spring Summer 2024 collection for Oude Waag beautifully encapsulated the idea that there is an undeniable strength in embracing softness and knowing when to yield and sway instead of standing unwavering. It's a concept that may seem contradictory, but part of resilience lies in understanding when to release and surrender.

For this collection, Yin drew inspiration from the Japanese freedivers known as Ama, a community of women who collect abalone and pearls. These remarkable divers have built a legendary bond rooted in the independence and fortitude of the female spirit. Their ability to gauge when to dive deeper or resurface symbolizes an intricate understanding of one's body, serving as a poetic yet unmistakable metaphor for resilience.

Jingwei Yin, a graduate of the Royal College of Art who founded Oude Waag in 2017, showcased his exceptional skills in ingenious draping, tacking, shirring, and tailoring. Having gained experience at renowned fashion houses like Haider Ackermann and Hussein Chalayan, Yin's signature style exudes a sensuous allure and an enticing sense of revelation. His designs are not necessarily geared towards a younger audience but are undeniably contemporary and in harmony with some of his trendsetting Western counterparts.

Yin's use of flowing chiffon exuded a sensation of floating beneath the sea as the models moved gracefully down the runway. He employed numerous knots as focal points in his draping and as intricate details in his tailored pieces, drawing inspiration from the shapes of abalone shells and the twists in natural pearls. His interpretation of fishing nets in meticulously distressed crochet knitwear added a more literal but equally captivating dimension to the collection. Notably, the trains billowing from his sharply tailored jackets, as seen in looks 10 and 24, left a lasting impression.

The way Yin molds fabric around the body is a delicate balance of mathematical precision and intimacy. His profound understanding of where to gather volume and when to release it was evident in the graceful draping of a gown, which cascaded from a necklace, twisted at the navel, and gently caressed the model's spine, much like the ebb and flow of waves along the shoreline.
