Tod's Spring Spring Summer 2024 collection fashion show at Milano Fashion Week SS24 (September 22, 2023).
Walter Chiapponi presented his last collection as the creative director of Tod's, and it was described as one of his most personal and best creations. The collection featured elements from Chiapponi's youth, and the show was held at the Laboratori Scala Ansaldo, a location he holds dear.
Personal Touches - The collection included a cropped multicolored hand-crocheted sweater reminiscent of one Chiapponi wore as a child. The choice of location was significant, as Chiapponi revealed that he had wanted to be a sculptor during his youth. The Laboratori Scala Ansaldo is known for creating imaginative sets for the La Scala theater, and Tod's is a member of the theater's foundation.
Celebration of Italian Craftsmanship - During the show, artisans were seen working on Tod's leather goods near the stage props for the upcoming "Don Carlos" production, which is set to premiere at La Scala in December. This emphasized the brand's commitment to Italian craftsmanship.
Innovative Design - Chiapponi's designs showcased innovation, with patchwork bicolor pleated skirts and shirts that resembled jackets. The collection featured fluid shapes, lightweight and deconstructed collarless jackets, ample pleated pants, poplin T-shirts with kimono sleeves, and practical linen gauze shirt dresses. The waist was accentuated with a new accessory, a large multipurpose belt, contributing to a subtle '90s influence.
Natural Color Palette with Contrasting Accents - The collection primarily featured a natural color palette with touches of lime and light periwinkle. Chiapponi noted that both he and the Tod's brand have evolved over the years, with Tod's woman becoming less romantic and more self-aware.
Signature Leather Expertise and New Accessories - Tod's signature leather expertise was showcased in lightweight trench coats made from sheer fabrics or leather, along with a soft napa blouson. The collection introduced new accessories, including a woven sandal, Tod's iconic ballerinas and moccasins, and a structured and geometric T-Box bag in polished leather with a metal T fastening.
Chiapponi's Future Endeavors - As for Walter Chiapponi's next steps, he revealed that he would be embarking on a three-month stay in Uganda with a non-profit organization focused on child protection.
Tod's Spring Summer 2024 collection by Walter Chiapponi celebrated personal and artistic inspiration, featuring innovative designs, a nod to Italian craftsmanship, and a natural color palette with contrasting accents. It marked Chiapponi's final collection as the creative director of Tod's.
