La DoubleJ designer JJ Martin presented her Fall Winter 2023-2024 collection, titled "Awakening the Divine," at San Paolo Converso, a deconsecrated church in Italy that has served as a recording studio and art exhibition space. Inspired by her spiritual journey down the Nile in Egypt, Martin's collection featured intricate house prints with cat, scarab, falcon, ankh, and papyrus motifs.
One notable aspect of the collection was the focus on body-inclusive silhouettes, including high-waist dresses with full skirts, capes, trench coats, velvet pantsuits, and jersey pieces. Martin also introduced denim pieces with hand-placed prints on jackets, skirts, and high-waist jeans, which can be worn with her signature "Raise the Vibration" tees.
In an effort to widen her brand, Martin interpreted the spirit of intricate patterns and embroideries on more accessible pieces, including solids and graphic knits. She aims to mix sacred symbols from different cultures and experiences, drawing inspiration from her recent trips, such as plant medicine ceremonies with Indigenous tribes in Brazil.
Martin expressed her excitement about showcasing her collection in a church, which was once a holy place, and how she enjoys playing with the cross-cultural symbolism and mixing different elements in her designs. The "Awakening the Divine" collection by La DoubleJ reflects Martin's lifelong spiritual journey and her creative exploration of diverse cultural influences.
