In anticipation of the appointment of a new creative director, Lanvin delved deep into its rich heritage for its Spring Summer 2024 collection. As the oldest fashion house in Paris, Lanvin is synonymous with the glamour of the 1920s and '30s, eras celebrated for their profound influence on fashion and design.
The showroom presentation showcased approximately a dozen looks, each displayed within modernist boxes elegantly resting on classic columns. Siddhartha Shukla, deputy general manager of Lanvin, expressed the brand's intent to celebrate the exceptional capabilities of its in-house design studio and atelier. This emphasis was evident in delicately embroidered suits and evening dresses for women, as well as impeccably tailored ensembles for men, occasionally featuring shaggy floral embroidery adorning breast pockets.
There was a discernible touch of Alber Elbaz's craftsmanship in the intentionally frayed silk tank tops and the delicate strips of silk caressing the neck. The collection's saturated colors drew inspiration from vintage Lanvin advertising photographs by the renowned Guy Bourdin.
Shukla described the process as one of deciphering the brand's archives to establish a design "grammar" that could propel Lanvin into the future. The collection's columnar silhouettes, luxurious fabrics, and soft color palette conveyed a sense of opulence while keeping the brand open to the possibilities of its next creative chapter.
"I think it's less about the house being in transition and more about the house preparing itself for what is to come," Shukla noted. Since his appointment and the Lanvin Group's IPO, the brand has initiated a visual and product strategy reset, with recent collections emphasizing a quieter form of chic, albeit with a touch more vibrancy in this instance.
