In a heartfelt tribute to his late grandmother, fashion designer Peter Do unveiled his latest collection for Fall Winter 2024-2025, aptly named Áo Dài. Drawing inspiration from his childhood memories of his grandmother adorned in the traditional Vietnamese attire, Do's collection pays homage to heritage while embracing modernity and versatility.
The presentation, held at a gallery on Rue de Richelieu, eschewed the traditional runway show format, opting instead for an intimate setting reminiscent of an art exhibition. This choice reflects Do's personal connection to the collection, which is not just about fashion but also about preserving memories and cultural heritage.
At the heart of the collection are reinterpretations of the áo dài, a traditional Vietnamese uniform consisting of a long tunic and matching pants. Do's version, crafted from luxurious fabrics such as white velvet dévoré and Japanese black raw denim, captures the essence of the traditional attire while infusing it with contemporary flair.
One standout piece is a black-and-white abstract print pantsuit, softened by a matching wrap skirt that adds a touch of elegance and fluidity to the ensemble. Meanwhile, Do's signature oversized blazer jackets, available in padded black satin and gray knit, offer both comfort and style, blurring the lines between loungewear and outerwear.
Beyond paying homage to his heritage, Do's collection also showcases his commitment to versatility and functionality. Modular dressing ideas are evident throughout the collection, with pieces designed to be worn in multiple ways. From jackets with functional buttons on the sleeves to silk twill lining fabric minidresses paired with waistcoat-slash-apron dresses, each garment is thoughtfully crafted to offer endless styling possibilities.
In a departure from the industry norm, Do plans to open the gallery to the public, inviting visitors to experience the collection up close and personal. This gesture reflects his desire to create a more intimate connection with his audience, prioritizing creativity and personal expression over commercial success.
As Do embarks on this new chapter in his career, balancing the demands of nurturing his eponymous brand with his role as creative director of Helmut Lang, he remains committed to staying true to his vision. For him, the collection is not just about fashion; it's a labor of love, a tribute to his grandmother, and a celebration of heritage and creativity.
