Carolina Herrera Spring Summer 2024: A Nostalgic Ode to '90s New York Chic - Wes Gordon, the creative genius behind Carolina Herrera, took a delightful journey down memory lane for his Spring Summer 2024 collection, drawing inspiration from the captivating style of 1990s New York City. His mood board, adorned with images of fashion icons like Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and Gwyneth Paltrow, served as a testament to the era's enduring influence on contemporary fashion.
Gordon's vision for this collection was to capture the essence of that time, not through minimalism, but by embracing a wardrobe approach. He believes in the idea that clean lines don't have to equate to boredom; they can exude femininity, energy, confidence, and wit. With this ethos in mind, he crafted a Carolina Herrera collection that embraced a more linear, streamlined aesthetic for Spring Summer 2024.
The setting for the presentation added an extra layer of sophistication, as the collection was showcased on the ground floor of the Renzo Piano-designed Whitney Museum. The venue's polished gray concrete and expansive walls of glass provided a sleek backdrop for Gordon's cosmopolitan uniform.
In his pursuit of a more refined interpretation of the house's romantic codes, Gordon eliminated unnecessary seaming and focused on pragmatic pieces. The show began with a nod to the classic Carolina Herrera and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy look—a black pencil skirt paired with a crisp white cotton shirt, complemented by kitten-heel slingbacks.
Elongated silk blazers, tied to the side over slips, captured the ease and elegance of the '90s, as did a strapless black silk top and wide-leg pants ensemble that epitomized chic simplicity.
Hot pants, a trend making a resurgence this season, found their place at Herrera as well. Gordon's version came in a lavender floral knit, paired with a matching cardigan for a playful yet sophisticated look. He also embraced the transparency trend with a shimmering black embroidered lace pencil skirt and black briefs, juxtaposed with a prim lilac twin set and flat shoes, creating a harmonious balance between sultry and demure.
While party dresses have always been a cornerstone of the Carolina Herrera brand, this season saw a departure from embellishments in favor of form. Gordon introduced designs like a black and lavender stripe micro-pleated tulle ballgown that billowed gracefully like a beach umbrella and bustier dresses adorned with micro-pleated tulle cage skirts. These creations embody the perfect fusion of nostalgia and modernity, paying homage to the brand's rich history while celebrating the contemporary spirit of fashion.
