Mikio Sakabe Fall Winter 2024-25 Fashion Show

MIKIO SAKABE presented its Fall Winter 2024-2025 collection at Yoyogi National Gymnasium in Tokyo. After several seasons of minimalist collections, MIKIO SAKABE took a dramatic turn this season with a revival of decorative mood. Designer Mikio Sakabe expressed his desire to showcase the "materiality" that is intertwined with personal memories and emotions, departing from the strictly functional aspect of fashion products.

The collection began with plain looks dominated by white tones, maintaining the minimalist image from previous seasons while evolving the presented items. Inspired by "aging," jackets featured dust-like details around the shoulders, exemplifying this evolution.

True to Sakabe's words about showing stories through fashion, the atmosphere of the show shifted significantly as it progressed. Rather than focusing on the "micro" details of individual items, the collection demonstrated a strong awareness of the overall flow, adopting a "macro" perspective in its creation. In the middle of the show, looks with exaggerated silhouettes that demanded attention made their appearance.

For instance, long dresses with dramatically elongated hemlines, featuring "ultra-long" sleeves, emphasized voluminous shoulder structures, highlighting the mismatch between the body and the garment. Collaborative "puffy platform" sneakers with Grounds further accentuated the exaggerated creations.

As the show progressed, the color palette transitioned to autumnal and wintry tones like mustard, brown, and black. These darker tones served as a backdrop for heavily embellished jackets and pants adorned with sequins resembling stars in the night sky. Additionally, shiny materials arranged in stripes resembling clown suits and pants adorned with sparkling silver stars added a glamorous touch. The "mirror ball" makeup applied to the models' faces also left a lasting impression.

The costumes became increasingly extravagant and excessive. The dramatic finale featured voluminous dresses packed with pleats, frills, and contrasting materials, creating a truly extravagant display. The billowing skirts, filled with ample fabric, swayed with each step, making a fittingly grand statement to conclude the collection.
