At Milano Fashion Week FW26, Prada delivered a collection titled A Lesson in Layers—though “lesson” may be too orderly a word for what unfolded. The world, as the designers implied, feels unstable. The runway mirrored that instability with deliberate disarray.
Fifteen models stormed across a vast, carpeted set at a relentless pace, returning three additional times in altered states of dress. Layers were added, stripped, recalibrated. A flaring skirt revealed itself as part of a 1950s-inflected dress; beneath a trim black pantsuit emerged cotton drawers and a gray sweater. The repetition functioned as live deconstruction, forcing the audience to reconsider first impressions and recognize clothing as process rather than product.
The garments themselves leaned into decay. Black wool appeared corroded, seams peeled back on crinkled trench coats to expose checkered linings, and shirts hung wrinkled with exaggerated French cuffs. Tubular dress coats and utility capelets—some edged with vertical strips of animal-print fluff—echoed silhouettes previously explored in the men’s collections. Fraying edges and purposeful soiling disrupted any notion of polish. The chaos was aesthetic, not accidental.
Yet Prada counterbalanced imperfection with overt luxury. Petite bucket and top-handle bags arrived in glossy alligator. Tall lace-up boots were embellished with beads or entirely paved in feathers. These accessories, immaculate and opulent, acted as tension points within ensembles that otherwise flirted with collapse. Minimal met ornate; damaged confronted pristine.
The set amplified the thesis. A hollowed-out mansion shell—moldings intact, marble fireplaces clinging to the perimeter—was layered with paintings and furniture spanning five centuries. Culture upon culture, era upon era. It was scenographic palimpsest, reinforcing the designers’ assertion that there is no imposed hierarchy between minimalism and opulence, nor between destruction and refinement.
Backstage, amid the characteristic Prada scrum, the concept was articulated as a meditation on “the continuous necessity of change.” Clothing became metaphor for adaptation: a woman navigating flux, adding and subtracting elements as conditions demand. The layering was not merely visual but philosophical.
Still, intention does not entirely tame impact. The show’s velocity, density, and studied messiness risked overwhelming the eye. Prada’s sets often disorient; here, the disjunction between music, space, and garment intensified that sensation. For some, it read as liberating freedom. For others, it verged on excess.
Prada Fall Winter 2026-2027 embraced contradiction without apology. It proposed that beauty can reside in corrosion, that luxury can coexist with apparent ruin, and that coherence may be less relevant than responsiveness. Continuous change? Certainly. Whether the audience welcomes the mess is another matter.
