Fashion is a cyclical industry, and it often revisits past trends and styles. Alexander Wang, a prominent designer, has taken a step back in time to revive one of his iconic creations, the Rocco bag, as part of his Resort 2024 collection. The return of this iconic accessory marks a significant milestone in Wang's career as he continues to evolve his brand and cater to the ever-changing preferences of fashion-conscious individuals.

The Rocco Bag, initially introduced in 2009, has become the centerpiece of Alexander Wang's Resort 2024 collection. It's a remarkable comeback for a design that once seemed to be too ubiquitous. Wang, reflecting on the resurgence of the Rocco, mentioned that he was initially hesitant, asking himself if they were really back to that era. He recollected, "I felt like it was just literally yesterday when I thought, 'there's too much Rocco,' we need to purge."

However, Wang's decision to bring back the Rocco has proven to be well-timed. Fashion-conscious young people, who have recently embraced the Y2K trend, are now turning their attention to the 2010s. Wang noted, "They weren't around for the first round, and they're digging deeper into the depths of the internet. I couldn't believe it, but I was getting texts from people asking me to make it again." The Rocco bag's resurgence is enhanced by the utilization of high-frequency printing techniques that lend it a more contemporary and aerodynamic feel.

The early 2010s were undeniably the golden years for Alexander Wang. During this period, he opened his first store in New York and had not yet been appointed as the creative director at Balenciaga. It was a time when he was shaping his design language, characterized by deconstructed tailoring, the trend of underwear as outerwear, and the infusion of leather and denim, which set his brand apart and gave it a distinct street-style appeal.

Wang's pre-Instagram collections, which might seem like a lifetime ago to some, are now regarded as vintage. However, the designer himself remains forward-looking and continues to evolve his brand. He recently embarked on a listening tour in China, where he has expanded his retail footprint significantly. The feedback he received from customers was a desire for versatility, which has influenced his Resort 2024 collection.

Wang's commitment to versatility is reflected in his latest designs. He has introduced Dickies-style chinos with hidden stretch waistbands, allowing wearers to adjust their fit to be worn high or low. Additionally, he has introduced styling devices like boxer short tops that can be pulled on like a belt to create the exposed underwear look without the added bulk. For a touch of whimsy, Wang incorporated a photo print of coins on an oversized shirt, and buttons on jean jackets and denim shirts are designed to resemble nickels and dimes, although Wang clarified that they are not actual U.S. currency.

Alexander Wang's brand expansion is not limited to his design innovations. He has been actively expanding his retail presence, with about 15 stores opened in China in the past year. Wang continues to cater to the ever-evolving needs of his global clientele. In North America, he is set to open new stores in Toronto and Miami before the end of the year, with plans for further expansion in Las Vegas and Vancouver in early 2024.
