Ming Ma Spring Summer 2025 Lookbook

Ming Ma Spring Summer 2025 collection lookbook presented at Shanghai Fashion Week SS25.

For Spring Summer 2025, Ming Ma found inspiration in the works and adventurous spirit of Marianne North, the prolific British Victorian botanist and explorer. Known for her extensive travels from Jamaica to Brazil, Syria, and along the Nile, North documented the world’s diverse flora and landscapes in a way that resonated deeply with Ma’s own creative vision. Her curiosity and artistic exploration provided the perfect muse for the designer, who has consistently used floral motifs as a signature in his collections, always with a fresh perspective.

This season, Ma embraced a more mature and sensual approach, evident in his choice of fabrics like soft cottons, linens, and voiles. "It felt right to use natural fibers now," he said, steering away from the man-made materials he often used in the past. North’s oil paintings translated seamlessly into the collection’s repeat floral print, while playful bead clusters replicated the flowers she studied, bringing a sense of fun to the lineup.

Balancing whimsy with practicality, standout pieces included a versatile double-sided bomber, a lace zip-up hoodie, and silk bloomers styled with tailored shorts or pencil skirts. Ma also experimented with texture by starching some lace pieces to add structure, such as a slip dress and a tailored blazer, where every technical detail was exposed for appreciation.

Despite a quieter Shanghai Fashion Week, where the term “maturity” has become a recurring theme, Ma’s interpretation avoided the pitfalls of dullness or conservatism. Instead, it brought a fresh energy and sophistication to his designs, signaling that his creative compass is on the right path.
